Local first
By default nothing leaves your device. The app reads and writes your ledger in your own browser storage.
Server-side checks
If you use an account, every read and write is authorised on the server against your signed-in identity — the browser can never ask for someone else's records.
Secrets stay on the server
Database credentials and authentication keys live only in server environment variables and are never shipped to the browser.
Encrypted in transit
Cloud requests use HTTPS, and the session is held in httpOnly cookies that page scripts cannot read.

Full JSON backups and PDF reports are one click away, so you are never locked in.
Delete on your terms
Clear local data from Settings whenever you like. Deleting a record removes its repayment history with it.

Read this before you create an account — plain language, no legal maze.
What we collect
- Without an account: nothing. Your income, expenses, loans, debts and repayments stay in this browser only. We never see them.
- With an account: your email address, and the ledger records you choose to sync — names, amounts, dates, purposes and notes you type in.
- No card details, no bank connections, no contact-list access, and no tracking or advertising cookies.
How it is used
- Only to show you your own ledger and keep it backed up. Every request is authorised on the server against your signed-in identity.
- We never sell, share or profile your data, and we do not use it to train anything.
- You can export everything as JSON, PDF or CSV, and delete your local data or your account records at any time from Settings.
- Records about other people (a borrower's name or phone number) are yours to manage — only add what you genuinely need.
By creating an account you agree to this notice. Prefer to share nothing at all? Use the app without an account — it works fully offline and stores everything on your device.

Questions people usually ask
What can I track in Ethical Ledger?
Money you earn, money you spend, loans you give to others, loan requests you are still deciding on, and debts you owe. It all sits in one place.
Is Ethical Ledger really interest-free?
Yes. The app has no interest rate, no late fee and no penalty calculation anywhere. A balance only goes down when you record a repayment.
How do loan requests work?
You write the request down yourself inside the app — who asked, how much, and what it is for. Review it whenever you like, then approve it to create a real loan, or turn it down.
Do I need an account?
No. By default everything is stored on your own device and works offline. An account is only useful if you want your records available on another device.
Where is my data stored?
On your device, in your browser's local storage. If you choose to create an account, a copy is also saved to an encrypted-in-transit PostgreSQL database that only your signed-in account can read.
Can I use it on my phone?
Yes. It installs as an app on Android and iOS from your browser's menu, then opens and works with no connection.
Can I get my data out?
Always. You can export a full JSON backup, a PDF report, or a CSV of your income and expenses at any time from Settings.
What happens if I clear my browser data?
Local records are removed with it, so keep a backup export — or create an account so a copy lives in the cloud too.
